Far off the coast of Shandong, a new kind of power plant is quietly feeding China's coastal cities. A vast field of solar panels, fixed to steel trusses in shallow water, has become the world's first gigawatt scale open sea photovoltaic farm and a test bed for how to run a modern grid on weather dependent power.
In 2020, 67% of solar PV modules globally were made in China. 51 China accounts for a similarly large share of global PV cell and polysilicon production. 52 In 2021, solar power was 13% of China's power capacity and produced roughly 4% of China's electricity. 53
From Algeria on the Mediterranean coast to landlocked Zambia in the south, countries across Africa have been importing significantly more solar panels from China this year than in the past, which analysts say could be the start of a massive effort to help meet the continent's power demands with renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.
Chinese companies are also bidding on contracts to upgrade the electrical grid in South Africa. Those upgrades will add 14,000 kilometers (8,700 miles) of transmission lines the country desperately needs to deliver its increasing supply of solar power to all parts of the nation.
