Solar Energy
Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun. It is necessary for life on Earth, and can be harvested for human uses such as electricity.
View DetailsSolar power works by converting energy from the sun into power. There are two forms of energy generated from the sun for our use – electricity and heat. Both are generated through the use of solar panels, which range in size from residential rooftops to 'solar farms' stretching over acres of rural land. Is solar power a clean energy source?
We use the solar resource to provide daylight, electricity, and heat in four ways (in order of prevalence): Solar PV is the fastest-growing electricity resource in the world. It is fully renewable with few environmental impacts, and the cheapest source of electricity in many countries.
There are several ways to turn sunlight into usable energy, but almost all solar energy today comes from “solar photovoltaics (PV).” Solar PV relies on a natural property of “semiconductor” materials like silicon, which can absorb the energy from sunlight and turn it into electric current.
A solar thermal system generates electricity indirectly by capturing the heat of the sun to produce steam, which runs a turbine that produces electricity. A solar photovoltaic system produces electricity directly from the sun's light through a series of physical and chemical reactions known as the photovoltaic effect.
