National energy policy of Bangladesh The policy discusses the need to update Bangladesh's National Energy Policy (NEP) due to rising energy demand, insufficient supply, and ineffective management practices. Presently, only a small percentage of the population has access to electricity, and energy consumption per capita is low.
To this end, Bangladesh has developed major long-term energy plans such as Power System Master Plan 2016 (PSMP2016) / Revisiting Power System Master Plan 2016 (Revisiting PSMP2016), Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan 2016 (EECMP2016), and Gas Sector Master Plan 2017 (GSMP2017).
Demand in the northern Bangladesh substantially falls in winter season and instead, the surplus of energy can be exported to India. The Master Plan was developed by assessing the need of energy and power supply for the future. The plan is not the end of product, but any future potential development can be incorporated and adopted accordingly.
Bangladesh's power generation is based on fossil fuels, with natural gas contributing 65 % of power generation and a quarter of the generation coming from liquid fuel, while the rest comes from hydropower, coal, imported power, and renewables; more recently, LNG has been introduced into the energy mix .
